CAMP LIKE A LADY

One weekend in October, fifteen ladies took on rain, sleet, snow and disgruntled park rangers.

The ladies we know enjoy a good campfire. The crackle and pop of a sizzling ember, the art of making a really good s’more, and the simplicity in “roughing it.” And if there’s a decent bottle of whiskey and rye shared, ah – it warms the cockles of your heart.

We’re not sure where it all started, this myth that women like to stay indoors. Or when “glamping” became a thing. But we can proudly say that there were no heated tents involved in our camping trip. And we, at United By Blue, like to think we proved that myth wrong on our weekend in the mountains.

We reached out and invited local female bloggers, photographers, and writers to join us on a weekend of hiking and camping at Ricketts Glen State Park in northeast Pennsylvania. There were fifteen total – the farthest a five hour drive from Virginia! Kat from That Kind of Woman, Lauren from Handcrafted in Virginia and her friend Amanda @abs2908, photographer Tracy @tracythnguyen, Chaucee of Streets and Stripes and her friend Hannah @hannah_leah, Joy of Mornings Like These and her friend Emma, a photographer @emcalary, photographer Melissa @melissa_annetilley, Laicie of 1000 Threads, and Rebecca of A Daily Something, who was six months pregnant! And the motley crew from United By Blue: Creative Director Brianna Nieman, Photographer Kelly Smith, Director of Retail Jen Singley, and Jen's friend, Leanna @leezyphonehome.

Wrapped up in United By Blue scarves, knits, and fleece to counter the 40° weather and rain, we took to the trail. Ricketts Glen State Park is known for its 24 waterfalls and soon enough, we were surrounded by the trickle and din of running water. The trail was more of a muddy, rocky outcrop than a dusty flat path. It hugged the steep slope of hills and us with it. The canopy of trees with autumnal leaves became our cathedral window to constantly sing praise of – with brilliant hues of yellow, red, and orange against the slick jet black rock of the waterfalls.

Needless to say, all the girls had their cameras and it was perhaps the most well documented camping trip any of us have been on. We spent the most time at Ganoga Falls, the park’s largest waterfall at 97 feet. With a soft mist on everyone’s face, the girls traipsed over stones near the base of the falls to get as close as they could. The highlight was when not one, but several of the girls just sloshed right through the water to move to another rock and shrugged if someone asked if their shoes were wet. Anything for the right photo.

As the light began to fade, we wound our way back to the trailhead and headed to the campsite. As we set up our tents and stoked the fire, the rain began to threaten overhead. Everyone had brought side dishes and just as we were bringing out the desserts, it poured on us. We huddled under the tarp for as long as we could and then some of us made a dash to the largest tent, United By Blue’s Director of Retail, Jen Singley’s. Drinking wine and whiskey out of mugs, and wrapped in United By Blue’s Camp Blankets, we were warm and cozy as we heard the unmistakable ticking noise of sleet hitting our tarp. We finished the night with a visit from the park ranger to tell us we were a little too boisterous. We said he was invited to join us, but he didn’t seem too thrilled.

We woke up the next morning to frosty breath and snow. Snow. In the middle of October. After eggs and bacon, tents were packed and everything stowed away. Goodbyes and hugs and the promise to do this again – in warmer weather.

The group couldn’t have been a better gathering of strong-spirited and adventurous ladies. And if you can hike up waterfalls, pitch tents in the rain, and eat breakfast out in the snow, perhaps you too can camp like a lady.
