April 6th, 2019
On Saturday April 6th, 2019, United By Blue, Friends of the Poquessing Watershed, Bucks County Conservation District, Philadelphia Water Dept., REI, and Aqua Vida joined forces for a cleanup of the Poquessing Creek.
With the help of Temple Global Days of Service and a total of 227 volunteers, the crew was able to remove 27,000 lbs. of trash and recycling from the creek bed in under 3 hours (150 lbs. a minute). The area focused on was a steep slope where wind carried debris from the parking lot to the creek. With the help of the Philadelphia Water Dept. and some daring volunteers, over 150 shopping carts were also recovered.
Our Weird Trash Competition contenders hauled a safe, Christmas doll, and a saw, but the winning, "weirdest" item was an intact toilet! This cleanup was part of Philly Spring Cleanup, which is a city wide cleanup effort that takes place every spring. All sorts of friends came out to enjoy the day, including two popular fur friends Atlas & Cosmo (check them out in the photos!).
