March 25, 2017
On March 25th, United By Blue joined forces with the Bronx River Alliance and 61 volunteers for a cleanup of the Bronx River at Concrete Plant Park to kick-off the 2017 cleanup season in NYC!
Originally, a source of fishing and fresh water to the Mohegan Native Americans, the historic Bronx River, became an attraction for industry and trade by the mid 1700s. Concrete Plant Park, as mentioned in its name, was the site of an old concrete manufacturing plant before NYC Parks Department bought the land in 2000, beginning the revitalization of the industry-abandoned site. A few structures of the old concrete plant still stand in the park today, as sculptural symbols of the site’s history.
With everyone’s hard work and commitment, we were able to remove 3,479 lbs of trash and recycling from the riverbank, including tires, an old boom box, and even a message in a bottle! A special thanks to all of our partners: Zipcar, Bronx River Alliance, and CLIF Bar
