April 21, 2018
On April 21st, 2018, United By Blue and Bronx River Alliance partnered up to host an Earth Day cleanup of the Bronx River. Joined by 171 volunteers, the team took on the trash along the riverbanks and jetties in Soundview Park. Armed with trash-pickers and Clif bars, the crew hauled 2,525 pounds of trash and recycling out of the riverbanks! Besides trash-picking, our partners and volunteers spent time sharing how to celebrate Earth Day in our everyday lives: ideas ranged from carrying reusable water bottles to developing sustainable ways to practice cultural traditions. Volunteers also brought in some strange items that made for some laughs in our “Weird Trash” competition (played like it sounds) - a new plasma screen TV won the competition, but a plastic toad home was a close second. The trash haul, eco-friendly brainstorming, and laughs made for great Earth Day cleanup all around, leaving the park and river a bit better than we found it!
Special thanks to Bronx River Alliance and Clif Bar for making this cleanup a success!
