On a picture-perfect Saturday morning, members of the Philadelphia community joined United by Blue, the Central Delaware Advocacy Group and Lew Blum Towing for a memorable cleanup of the Delaware River. It began at one of the more needy areas: Pier 68 and the surrounding waterway. A towering crane pulled cart after cart from the shallow, muddy water below the pier. Volunteers soon ventured down walkways and wooded areas to collect plastic, styrofoam, wrappers, glass and plenty of weird trash. Odd items found included a STOP sign, a single shoe and, the weirdest of them all, an unbelievable 116 shopping carts!
Special thanks to the great volunteers and coordinating participants that made this event possible: CDAG, Lew Blum Towing, Rocco's Italian Sausage, Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, Philadelphia Water Department, Philadelphia Fire Department, Super Fresh, Staples and Shop Rite. Much thanks to First District Councilman Mark Squilla for his support.
