United by Blue and 167 volunteers gathered in Penn Treaty Park on May 16th for a cleanup of the Delaware River. On this bright and sunny evening, Philadelphia Water, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, and Keep Philadelphia Beautiful joined United by Blue for a total beautification of the park, nearby streets and river. Before the cleanup, The Forest Service spoke to volunteers about the Penn Treaty Elm and the importance of urban forestry, and honeygrow fueled everyone's cleaning powers with delicious snacks! In just 2 hours of cleaning, enthusiastic volunteers got their hands dirty, planting trees throughout the park, picking up trash and recyclables around the water's edge, and collecting plastics pollutants for an upcoming art exhibit on decomposition at the Chemical Heritage Foundation. With everyone's hard work, we were able to remove 1172 lbs of trash from Penn Treaty Park, including some odd items like a stuffed dinosaur, a three-wheeled stroller, and a box of "Jesus Band-aids"! After the cleanup, Barefoot Wine hosted an amazing volunteer appreciation party, offering complimentary wine and BBQ at Fishtown's Fette Sau on Frankford Ave.
