Date: Dec 1st, 2012

Location: Midland Beach

For our second post-Sandy cleanup, two full buses of volunteers headed to one of the hardest hit areas-Staten Island.

To prepare for the cleanup, we headed to Lowe’s and loaded two carts with the most needed cleanup items- heavy duty respirator masks, work gloves, shovels, trash bags, rakes, mops, buckets, hammers, and pry bars.
And a special thanks to  everyone who donated supplies to the clean up!
Once we arrived in Midland Beach, 130 volunteers broke into 3 major groups:
Canvas Crew - This group teamed up and went door to door with checklists and information to help assess damage and determine what kind of relief is needed.
Cleaning Crew - This group went with mops, buckets, brooms, rakes and cleaning supplies to help clean residents houses and their property.
Demo Crew - This group went into houses with sledge hammers, pry bars, shovels, and trash bags to help demolish their water soaked first floors.

The experience was truly eye-opening to the destruction the storm left behind and the people that are left trying to get their lives back together.  A month after this superstorm rolled in, many residents are still without power. When the waters rose seven feet, many Staten Island residents lost everything in the first story of their homes. Condemned notices were slapped on dozens of front doors. Windows were tagged with spray paint, marking the houses where Staten Islanders had to be rescued days following the storm.
After the cleanup, all of the materials were donated to  Occupy Sandy, so they can continue the great work they are doing in Staten Island. Our friends at  Green Philly Blog joined us for the day, read their full recap  here
We'd like to thank: University of Pennsylvania - Women's Soccer Team, Build On - Philadelphia Chapter,  Build On - Bronx Chapter, Rowan Relief, Rowan Alumni, and Clean It Supplies.
