97.7 lbs.

With the help of the staff of REI Carle Place, and staff of Jones Beach State Park, United by Blue and 51 volunteers gathered at Jones Beach State Park for a cleanup of the Atlantic Ocean on June 11th. Jones Beach is the most popular and heavily visited beach on the East Coast. A beautiful recreation area for surfers and stargazers alike, the west end of the beach can often be littered with plastic and items washed ashore due to heavy human use. Volunteers spent two hours picking up small pieces of plastic and metal from the sand. There were many strange items found including fishing lures, small toys, and a collection of false acrylic finger nails. With hard work and dedicated efforts, we were able to remove 97.7 lbs. of trash and recyclables from the beach and ocean.  This was the 8th cleanup, out of 11, on the United by Blue and REI Cleanups Crew Road Trip! A special thank you to all of our partners:  REIClif Bar, and  New York State Parks and Recreation.
