Santa monica beach cleanup

Santa monica beach cleanup

Aug 22, 2017

Santa Monica | California

October 19, 2017

341 lbs.

The United by Blue Cleanup Crew packed up their supplies and headed out the coast of Southern California to join up with REI stores and local conservation partners for a series of 4 waterway cleanups just outside of Los Angeles.

REI Santa Monica and Heal the Bay joined United by Blue as co-hosts of our 3rd cleanup of the road trip at Santa Monica Beach. 76 volunteers met on the North side of the Santa Monica Pier, and  helped to comb the beach and lot for trash. In total, they were able to collect 341 lbs. of garbage, which consisted of many single-use plastics: straws, water bottles, take out containers, and plastic bags. There were many unusual items in the mix as well, including a miniature tape dispenser, a pair of cut off jeans, and a giant truck tire!

Special thanks to REI Santa Monica and Heal the Bay for all of their knowledge and support!
