September - December, 2018
Throughout Fall 2018, United By Blue and the City of Philadelphia tackled a large-scale dumpsite cleanup along the Schuylkill River with the help of volunteers. After 3 cleanup phases of hard work and collaboration, the dumpsite has been completely cleaned up, leaving the riverbank restored and healthy. Following the cleanup, measures were taken to make sure that illegal dumping practices could not continue in the area. Thanks to collaboration between the Parks and Recreation Department, the Water Department, and United By Blue, concrete barriers and "No Dumping" signage were installed to prevent further dumping.
Check out our weight hauls below:
PHASE 1- 488 tires & bagged trash: 14,900 lbs
PHASE 2- Heavy machinery: 345,436 lbs
PHASE 3- Volunteer trash-picking: 31,685 lbs
For a grand total of: 392,021 lbs. of trash and recycling removed from the riverbank!
This cleanup would not be possible without the staff of the Philadelphia Water Department, the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department, Philadelphia Streets, Bridgestone Tires4ward, and our dedicated volunteer force!
Keep an eye out: video recap to come in January 2019!
