Schuylkill scrub cleanup

Schuylkill scrub cleanup

Apr 13, 2018

Bridgeport | Pennsylvania

May 24, 2018

2,600 lbs.

On May 24th, 2018, United By Blue took on the watershed-wide Schuylkill Scrub initiative alongside of Schuylkill Action NetworkPhiladelphia Water DepartmentSchuylkill River Greenways, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, and a team of wonderful volunteers. Despite rescheduling the cleanup due to flooding, a team of 31 volunteers made room in their Thursday evening to clean alongside the Schuylkill River. In only 2 hours of cleaning, the team hauled 2,600 lbs. of trash from the riverbanks, preventing this pollution from heading further downstream and eventually into the Atlantic. Volunteers pulled in some heavy-duty debris like mattresses and tires, as well as some light-hearted items for our Weird Trash competition - this time, a broken snow globe held by a witch took home the trophy. All in all, our volunteers closed out the Schuylkill Scrub season with a great contribution to the health of the Schuylkill River!

United By Blue thanks all its partners for making this event successful, including Zipcar and GoPhillyGo for their sustainable transportation to our cleanups. Volunteers were fueled by Clif bars at the cleanup, and refueled by Luke's Lobster with a post-cleanup free meal!
