Tacony creek cleanup

Mar 18, 2019

Philadelphia | Pennsylvania

March 16, 2019

22,340 lbs.

On Saturday March 16th, 2019, United By Blue, TFF Watershed, Philadelphia Water Dept.Partnership for the Delware Estuary, REI, and Aqua Vida joined forces for a cleanup of the Tacony Creek Park.

With the help of Volunteering Untapped PHL and a total of 238 volunteers, the crew was able to remove 22,340 lbs. of trash and recycling from the creek bed in under 3 hours. The area focused on was along the Whitaker entrance, which street debris and wind made for the perfect storm. Our Weird Trash Competition contenders hauled an untouched birthday cake, along with a Valentine card, and side panel of a car. Besides trash removal, 30 volunteers also assisted with storm drain marking in the neighborhood. This was United By Blue's largest turnout for volunteers and it showed with the biggest haul for a community cleanup to date.

Following the cleanup, volunteers enjoyed pretzels onsite followed by Volunteering Untapped's afterparty at Evil Genius in Fishtown to celebrate a clean park that will shine brighter for the Healthy trails 5k on April 7th.
