Quantcast Topanga Beach Cleanup - United By Blue

Malibu | California

Date

Haul
470 lbs.

The United by Blue Cleanup Crew packed up their supplies and headed out the coast of Southern California to join up with REI stores and local conservation partners for a series of 4 waterway cleanups just outside of Los Angeles.

The 4th and final cleanup of the UBB Cleanup SoCal Road Trip was held at Topanga Beach with REI Burbank and Surfrider Foundation: Los Angeles Chapter. Along the Pacific Coast Highway, with the Santa Monica Mountains to the North, Topanga Beach is known for it’s unique rocky landscape and giant ocean swells. Surfers populate the beach to catch Topanga’s famous waves. Unfortunately, trash, such as cigarette filters and plastic wrappers, often gets carried to the shore from the ocean tide or Topanga Creek, and collect in the rocks and dunes. 134 volunteers joined forces for this cleanup, and were able to remove an impressive 470 lbs of trash from the beach! Their findings ranged from everyday plastic bottles, cigarettes, and straws, to peculiar items like a guitar back and figurine houses!

Special thanks to our partners at REI Burbank and Surfrider Foundation for their support in helping to plan and execute the cleanup!
