On September 16th, 235 volunteers gathered to join United by Blue, REI and Friends of the Wissahickon for a cleanup of Wissahickon Creek and Devil's Pool in celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day!
Before emptying into the Schuylkill River, Wissahickon Creek runs for 23 miles through Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties. Part of creek forms the Wissahickon Valley, a National Natural Landmark and part of the Fairmount Park system. Our volunteers gathered in Wissahickon Valley Park and separated into groups, tackling the trash of various trails along the creek including Devil's Pool. Working for only 2 hours, they were able to collect 920 lbs. of trash and recycling including some strange items such as a distressed teddy bear!
United by Blue thanks all of the partners who helped to make this cleanup possible: : REI Conshohocken, Friends of the Wissahickon, Philadelphia Water, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, honeygrow and Zipcar.
