Tour This Sweet Treehouse

in the Heart of Santa Cruz

On our list of highly unrealistic things we wish would come true, living every day up in the trees pretty much tops it. So, needless to say, when we got the chance to visit Flipjack Ranch’s tricked-out treehouse for our spring shoot with Outbound Kitchen, we were beyond excited.

The Santa Cruz hideaway floats 14 feet above the redwood floor and is fully furnished with pretty much all the comforts of home. Complete with an outdoor shower, king-sized bed, and spacious deck, it’s a spot we’d break our lease for. You can rent the entire space for your next weekend getaway or check out our tour below for the must-know details:

The rustic treehouse sits hidden along the woods on the perimeter of the ranch. The property also serves as a bed-and-breakfast in the main house and a working farm throughout. As such, the grounds are often occupied by the ranch’s animal residents, including: two cats, a handful of roosters, hens, turkeys, and occasional appearances by other wildlife, like mink and mountain lions.

As you would expect, the treehouse boasts amazing views from dawn ‘til dusk. Catch the sunrise cozied up in an Adirondack chair on the deck then spend the evening stargazing from the living room skylight.

Owners Robin and David Colleen built the treehouse in 2017 and weave in homey touches throughout the space, like the comfiest overstuffed couch and fresh flowers.

And for the most refreshing wakeup call, there is the outdoor shower, well-positioned to hear the early birds chirp (or resident rooster crow).

Yep, that’s a fireplace. And a mini fridge tucked back there. We suggest arriving with a case of beer, deck of cards, and a good book.

Our favorite feature? The fully movable pulley basket that hangs over the deck. The crew at Outbound Kitchen used it to hoist ingredients up with ease. The Flipjack Ranch staff fills it daily with complimentary biscotti and coffee as a delicious breakfast (should you choose not to grab some of their locally foraged fare down at the main house).
