Title:   Cleanup Operations Assistant

Overview:  The Cleanup Operations Assistant is essential to the  strategic growth of United By Blue’s mission.  Your role will evolve as the needs of the Cleanup Department expand. A large component of the position is event support and logistics and you are expected to attend all cleanup events on the cleanups calendar.  A love of trash and in-office dogs a plus. This position reports into the Head of Cleanups.

Please Note: This role  will begin in  Fall 2018. Please mind that interviews for this position will not begin until Fall 2018. 

What you’ll do

Regional Cleanup Events: We organize waterway cleanup events in the Philadelphia and New York City area.

  • Cleanup Events – to attend every UBB cleanup event as direct support for the Regional Cleanups Coordinator.
  • Cleanup Communication – post cleanups online and to the United By Blue website, update promotional materials for stores and partners, and coordinate pre and post cleanup emails to registered volunteers.
  • Volunteer Recruitment – research and index relevant stakeholders, volunteer contacts and groups, and manage inbox of  general cleanups email address.
  • Supplies – inventory, order, and prepare all supplies for cleanups, and coordinate supply deliveries/shipments.
  • Wrap up –  update website and Facebook album/event with cleanup recap and photos.

High Yield Cleanup Events and Special Projects:  Assist the Head of Cleanups in the planning and execution of high yield (20+ ton) cleanup events and support the research and development of special projects.

  • Cleanup Events – to attend every UBB cleanup event as direct support for the Head of Cleanups.
  • Site Selection  – identify, research, and (when applicable) visit site leads with the goal of securing multiple high yield cleanup sites in coordination with the Head of Cleanups.
  • Cleanup Communication – post cleanups online and to the United By Blue website, update promotional materials, and coordinate pre and post cleanup emails to registered volunteers.
  • Volunteer Recruitment – own e xternal volunteer recruitment with a focus on improving outreach processes and creative tactics for securing volunteer groups.
  • Supplies and Logistics – inventory, order, and prepare all supplies for cleanups, and coordinate supply deliveries/shipments. Assist the Head of Cleanups with securing permits/permissions, machinery, and tools.
  • Wrap up –  update website and Facebook album/event with cleanup recap and photos.
  • Special Projects – United by Blue is expanding its impact beyond volunteer-based cleanups. The Cleanup Operations Assistant will assist the Head of Cleanups in researching and pursuing new opportunities for removing large amounts of trash from the world's rivers and small waterways.

  • Effective communicator (written and oral) with ability to relate to a variety of personalities.
  • Lover of the outdoors and conservation, with high regard for natural resources (especially water).

Requirements:

  • Applicants with a background in event planning/management, volunteer event management, or communications will excel in this role.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • 70% office / 30% travel with some nights and weekends.
  • Able to sit at a computer or in a vehicle for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. or more.
  • Strong organizational, prioritizing and time management skills.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
  • Negotiating experience a plus.
