We started United By Blue in 2010 out of a desire to preserve the place where we play. Instead of writing checks or accepting donations, we wanted to make a real, tangible impact on our oceans — and there are few things more tangible than hauling tires out of riverbeds or picking up plastic bottles along the shoreline.
So we pledged to remove a pound of trash from the earth’s oceans and waterways for every product we sell through company-organized cleanups. We hosted our first cleanup the same week we sold our first T-shirt. Today, we have hosted 177 cleanups and removed over 995,000 pounds of trash from rivers, streams, creeks, and beaches across 26 US states.
WE THINK FOR-PROFITS SHOULD BE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
The amount of plastic waste in our oceans and waterways is mind-boggling: 8 millions tons of plastic enter oceans each year. Plastic bottles alone make up 1.5 million tons of plastic waste annually. Plastics and other litter ultimately end up in the world’s gyres, or circulating ocean currents, and can turn into dense vortexes of trash. The most famous marine trash heap, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is twice the size of Texas.LEARN MORE & SIGN UP
SPACES GROUNDED IN SUSTAINABILITY & COMMUNITY
United By Blue's home base is in Philadelphia, and we've begun to venture into New Jersey and New York with more on the horizon. Sustainability and building community are at the center of everything we do, and our stores are no exception. From our construction materials to everyday energy and waste practices to the coffee we serve, everything at our retail locations is done to create as small of an ecological footprint as possible.LEARN MORE
