Title: Impact Program Coordinator - Waterway Cleanups

Position Overview:
The Impact Program Coordinator (IPC) is responsible for key operations related to United By Blue’s one-for-one business model, which is to remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways for every product sold through the business. The IPC will plan and execute all types of waterway and coastal litter cleanup projects, including Community Cleanups (volunteer, community engagement events), High Yield Cleanups (large trash cleanup projects), and other cleanup programs. While Waterway Cleanups are the IPC’s primary focus, in some cases, the IPC will also contribute towards non-cleanup projects that relate to the company’s sustainability strategy and related impact initiatives.
This role requires and builds skill in event planning and coordination, environmental stewardship programs, community engagement programs, waterway and ocean cleanups, cross-sector partner relations, and corporate social responsibility.
Team Overview:
The Sustainability and Impact team executes the company’s mission to remove one pound of trash from the world’s oceans and waterways for every product sold. The team is responsible for developing strategies to remove trash from waterways and track the mission’s progress. This department also oversees various sustainability initiatives at United By Blue, and there is overlap between our cleanups-related work and the company’s larger sustainability strategy.
Job Logistics:
Full time position (40 hours/week, Monday - Friday)
An estimated 5-10 weekends/year of travel should be expected, plus occasional week-day travel to manage cleanup projects and events. Commiserate week-day time off is given for weekends worked, without counting towards PTO. These days should be taken within 2 weeks of the weekend worked.
Travel can be planned around the IPC’s personal schedule (to a certain extent), and the IPC will have a say in the scheduling of travel cleanup events/projects.
Travel quota is estimated, and could be greater or less than this estimation.
This is a hybrid remote/in-person position. Most day-to-day work can be done remotely, but occasional in-person work is required to run cleanup events or projects, manage the company’s inventory of cleanup supplies (vans, trash bags, gloves, tables, tents, etc.), work with regional field cleanup teams, conduct site scouts, etc. Candidates should live near a major travel hub/airport and be able to easily travel via plane or car.
What You’ll Do:
Support the strategy and execution plan to fulfill United By Blue’s weight removal goals each year in accordance with the one-for-one mission.
Coordinate a variety of cleanup projects to fulfill the company’s cleanup weight goals, including but not limited to:
Community Cleanups (these are community events where volunteers, nonprofits, and other groups are invited to participate in a litter cleanup in a public area such as a beach or riverside park)
Plan an estimated 20-30 Community Cleanup events/year in accordance with cleanup department goals, partnerships, and geographic priorities
Create effective systems for volunteer recruitment and management
Assist with marketing and promotional plans for cleanups
Execute 5-10 Community Cleanups per year onsite
High Yield Cleanups (these are professionally run cleanup projects targeting a large volume of trash in water or the environment, in which UBB funds and coordinates the cleanup of the site)
Research and develop a pipeline of high yield cleanup projects through site lead generation
Support the Sustainability + Impact Manager in executing High Yield Cleanup projects
International Cleanups (these are overseas cleanup projects run by UBB’s partner network)
Assist Sustainability + Impact Manager in Research and Development responsibilities for scaling the capacity of UBB’s international cleanup operations and passive weight removal
DIY Cleanups (these are “virtual” cleanups that allow our community to participate in a cleanup activity if they can’t make a physical event)
Assist in the development and roll-out of effective DIY Cleanup management systems
Partnership / Stakeholder Management:
Build and maintain relationships with a network of cross-sector cleanup partners, including nonprofits, municipalities, corporate partners, and logistics partners that help make cleanups run smoothly
Work with other Cleanups team members to plan partner-specific cleanups that come through our Impact Partnerships business funnel
Impact Reporting:
Support the coordination of effective reporting systems that allow UBB to measure the impact of the cleanups program
Marketing/Communications:
Serve as a liaison between Cleanups and Marketing to create effective communication strategies for cleanup projects and progress
Sustainability:
In some cases, the IPC may opt into supporting other sustainability initiatives at UBB that relate to the company’s overarching sustainability strategy and goals.
Who You Are:
1-2 years of professional event planning experience, preferably in community engagement and/or environmental stewardship fields
Experience in and/or familiarity with volunteer recruitment and management tactics
Experience in and/or familiarity with community engagement tactics
Strong research and analytical skills
Strong communication skills, with an emphasis on warm and professional communication styles that build lasting relationships for the programs you work on
Willingness to occasionally work in an outdoors environment with physical demands such as transporting vans, moving and organizing supplies (tents, tables, boxes, etc.), lifting and weighing trash bags, walking/standing long periods of time on uneven terrain, and traveling with cleanup supplies (occasionally).
Proficient in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
Strong organizational skills; will be expected to manage files and spreadsheets for multiple cleanup events at once
Strong, self-motivated accountability; will be held to work deliverables and deadlines, occasionally without direct supervision
Adaptability in the face of changing event or project circumstances
Interest in ocean and waterway conservation issues
Interest in sustainable business practices and mission-driven work
