We get it, The Responsible Flannel sounds a bit like an oxymoron. The thought of trusting something so synonymous with 90's grunge fashion with any level of responsibility can be…questionable. But nonetheless, what’s one of our most responsibly-made items is, in fact, a flannel.
It all started in 2018 when the UBB team was on the hunt for the perfect flannel. We scoured the trade show floors in search of one that checked all of the boxes: substantial weight, great fit, super soft feel, and sustainably made. And, much to our dismay, we couldn’t find it. So we set out to make our own.
We approached Hemp Fortex – a solar-powered, vertically-integrated, and heavily-certified manufacturer known for creating high-quality sustainable textiles – about creating an exclusive flannel just for us. Combining all of the little bits and pieces that we loved about the countless flannels we tried on during trade shows, The Responsible Flannel was born.
Over the next few years, we perfected the flannel’s fit and fabric. In addition to giving it a more relaxed and modern silhouette, we removed the spandex from its material content – making it easier to process and recycle at the end of its life.
Today, The Responsible Flannel is crafted from 60% OCS-certified organic cotton and 40% REPREVE® recycled polyester – a blend that gives it the softest handfeel we could find, the best durability, and the perfect amount of warmth. It’s also topped off with biodegradable corozo buttons made from nuts. Not bad for a laidback button down.
Just like all of our products, every Responsible Flannel promises to clean a pound of trash, is climate neutral, and ships plastic-free. So while it may not have the power to transform you into the responsible member of society you know you should be, it sure does do a lot for the planet.
