Selina Saldívar is a graphic designer, lettering artist, and illustrator based in Houston, Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. Selina's work is often influenced by social movements and important issues, finding ways to inspire others through her creations.
I currently go back and forth between the Rio Grande Valley and Houston, Texas. 
I've been making art consistently for a couple of years now. I started out doing graphic design about a decade ago. I then took some calligraphy classes and eventually transitioned into lettering. 
Lately I've been creating a lot of digital work. That's what I tend to share. Behind the scenes I love to work with acrylic paint and gouache. It's something I'm hoping to show more of in the future. 
Some of my common themes are mental health, self-empowerment, positivity, and acceptance mixed in with some activism. A lot of the time they are affirmations I tell myself. It's all within the scope of helping yourself and making sure you're okay so you can then help others. 
I'm influenced by my personal experiences, interactions with people I love, what's happening in the world, other artists, music, etc... A commonality between my major influences is that they have passion and perspective. That's what inspires me the most. 
For me, it always starts with a phrase or an image that I can really identify with. Most of the time I get inspired to sketch or draw at night and I do most of my revisions during the day. 
I try to stay aware of what is happening and be receptive to new ideas and movements on how to fix certain issues. That inevitably influences my work. I think that art is a great way to either start a conversation or present information in a way that people can relate to in order to cause change.
I felt really connected to the ideas behind the themes for this collection of building community and solidarity. Anything that promotes or impacts good social change will always be something that I am willing to be a part of. 
The best advice I could give is to just start, practice everyday, and figure out what you want to say with your art.
