Last week, the UBB team visited the beautiful city of Atlanta to gather with like minded B Corp professionals to clean up the historic Vine City neighborhood, the home of Martin Luther King Jr.
Benefit Corporations or B Corps are mission-driven businesses that balance people, planet, and profit. This can take many different forms like a Kentucky based janitorial company caring for its workers through subsidized housing programs and low cost fruits and vegetables for workers and their families. For United by Blue, it looks like improving our communities and waterways by removing waste from areas that need it most. Each business attending BLD Southeast is fueled by a different cause that they weave into the fabric of their brand.
Around 30 volunteers met at Rodney Cook Sr. Park. This park creates watershed management infrastructure to divert stormwater runoff. Before this park, homes in low lying areas would flood every time a strong storm rolled in. We were able to clean debris out of the storm water infrastructure as well as the nearby neighborhood streets. In areas where homes were condemned, a large amount of waste piled up. Much of this debris looked like it had been there for decades. There will always be more work to do in these areas but we were able to make a significant difference.
All in all, we were able to:
57 Bags of Litter/Plastic Pollution removed from the streets of Vine City
500+ Pounds of Trash in total
20+ Volunteers
4 Tires
1 Shopping Cart
2 hours of Service and Connecting
