Tacony Creek Cleanup - Philadelphia

Tacony Creek Cleanup - Philadelphia

The UBB team celebrated World Ocean’s Week in Washington DC advocating for plastic pollution legislation like the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act before congress. We also attended the Capitol Hill Oceans Week conference put on by our friends at the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.

After a week full of inspiring panelists, conversations, and action we returned to our hometown of Philadelphia, PA to help clean up Taconey Creek on World Oceans Day. The community of Philadelphia is unlike any other… There is always lots of debris to remove but it is met with an immense amount of energy to help the cleanup efforts. We partnered with TTF Watershed Partnership, the Philadelphia Water Department, Philadelphia Parks and Rec, and the B Local Philly community. Together we were able to remove 1,869 pounds of trash illegally dumped in the creek.

This debris has been left in Taconey Creek for over 5 years. It took the effort of our 85+ volunteers to get into those deep areas that are not accessible with smaller cleanup efforts. We removed tires, mattresses, shopping carts, construction waste and more.

UBB would love to extend a big thank you to all of our volunteers that made this cleanup so special. It was so incredible to be back in the city of Philadelphia and connect with the cleanup community. We are looking forward to working with these partners and volunteers to target a large illegal dumpsite in 2025.
