This World Oceans Day, United by Blue hosted a cleanup in the largest park in Brooklyn, NY… Marine Park. Together we were able to remove 1,674 pounds of ocean bound debris. The trash collected during our cleanup would directly flow from Shell Bank Creek into the Atlantic Ocean if our dedicated volunteers had not intercepted it. . Over 80% of marine debris originates from land based sources. Our efforts helped to keep these plastics, tires, and other debris out of the stomachs of marine life.
We partnered with our friends at Marine Park Alliance and Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy to target an area that was in need of our collective action. Our work that day helped to clear an area and hopefully bring more residents out to enjoy this shoreline. Netting was recently installed to allow more easy access to this area, with our deep cleaning we hope that more folks will enjoy this greenspace in the busy summer season!
