This past weekend, UBB headed to our hometown of Philadelphia. We partnered with Philadelphia Parks and Rec, the Philadelphia Water Dept, The Office of Clean and Green, and TTF Watershed at Tacony Creek Park. Over 280 volunteers braved the rain and removed over 51k pounds of tires, litter, and larger debris.
Our volunteers split into different groups, the biggest going to tackle the tires. The rest of the volunteers spread out to tackle high trash areas nearby.
This was one of the biggest illegal dumpsites in all of Philly's history and it was not an easy task to clean up. Many were shocked upon seeing the amount of tires in person, as the piles amounted to be over six feet high. The volunteers assembled to form 2 human chains to roll the thousands of tires up a steep and muddy hill into a city sanitation truck. Some of the tires were full of water and debris, which had to be manually cleared. Over 2,200 tires, 49K pounds of tires, trash and debris were picked up, the volunteers were muddy and wet, and the area was cleared of all tires!
Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers! Incredible strides were made this weekend to lead to a cleaner and greener city and a massive impact on both the watershed and community.
Philly, we'll be back soon!
