An Intro to Mass Balance Systems: How Cleanup Trash Becomes New Products

In our latest partnership with Corona, we removed 100,000 pounds of trash from beaches and gave thousands of pounds of ocean plastic a trash-to-treasure moment by turning it into better products – i.e. some of our bestselling bags. If you’re wondering how we were able to trace our impact from bottle to bag, the answer lies in a sustainable tracking system known as mass balance.

Essentially, “mass balance” refers to inputting a material into a supply chain that we pull the same material out of.

Plastic In, Plastic Out

In our case, the sustainable raw material used in our UBB x Corona Protect Our Beaches capsule is recycled polyester. We sent plastic from our UBB x Corona cleanups to REPREVE, a leading producer of recycled fibers. REPREVE operates one of the most advanced recycling facilities in the US and has some of the most certified, traceable fibers available in the world (AKA mass balance in action). REPREVE takes plastic waste and transforms it into performance fibers that are used to make apparel, accessories, and more – including the bags in our UBB x Corona Protect Our Beaches capsule

We cleaned up 100,000 pounds of trash from beaches, thousands of which were specifically plastic waste united by blue

we sent the plastic we collected to REPREVE, where it entered their fully-traceable system and was recycled into new fibers united by blue

we then sourced 100% recycled polyester from REPREVE to create the bags in our UBB x Corona protect our beaches capsule united by blue

This capsule was designed to promote cleaner beaches everywhere by removing a pound of trash for every product. By using a mass balance approach through REPREVE, we can confirm that the materials we’re using are fully recycled and started as waste – keeping perfectly good plastic in use and out of the ocean.
