Bolsa Chica State Beach Cleanup Recap

Last Friday on April 18th, UBB headed across the country to host a cleanup in Bolsa Chica State Beach. Despite the not-so-great weather conditions (we thought LA was always sunny...) we had a great turnout and spirits were high! This particular location is adjacent to a migratory bird nesting habitat. Our cleanup will directly keep trash and debris from disturbing the birds and their nests.

We started the morning with a grounding mindfulness and yoga session thanks to Yoga on the Beach. Then, the volunteers and crew got to work! Beach trash tends to be very lightweight trash such as styrofoam, straws and wrapper.

During the cleanup, we removed over 68 pounds of debris, including over 12 nurdles - these tiny plastic pellets are deadly to sea creatures, as they are easily mistaken for fish eggs. The nurdle collection will be used as evidence to support the implementation of the Plastic Pellet Free Water Act.

Most of what we found were single use plastics like straws, bottle caps, cups, and wrappers. These are items that can easily be replaced with reusable versions and is a change we can all make!

Thank you so much to our volunteers! We will be back soon!
