The Foundation directly supports America’s national marine sanctuaries through our mission to protect species, conserve ecosystems, and preserve cultural and maritime heritage. We accomplish our mission through community stewardship and engagement programs, on-the-water conservation projects, public education and outreach programs, and scientific research and exploration
Why Whales?
No species is as emblematic of national marine sanctuaries as the humpback whale. Whales live throughout the National Marine Sanctuary System, from American Samoa to Stellwagen Bank off the coast of Massachusetts, inspiring wonder and awe and the motivation to protect them and their habitats. Unfortunately, the threats faced by whales are also a common thread across our sanctuaries, including climate change, human-produced debris, and habitat impacts.
